BaZi vs Western astrology
Western astrology reads planetary positions at birth. BaZi (Four Pillars / 八字) reads a traditional Chinese calendar encoding of your birth date, time, and place into four pillars — year, month, day, and hour. Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day pillar: the reference point the rest of the chart is read against. Same birth data always yields the same BaZi chart when the method is fixed.
What Western astrology optimizes for
Western natal charts emphasize planetary geometry — sun, moon, rising, houses, and aspects. Interpretations are often psychological and symbolic. Two people born the same day can still differ if birth time or location shifts rising sign and house cusps.
That system is useful for many readers. It is not the same calculation as BaZi, and mixing the vocabularies usually creates confusion rather than clarity.
What BaZi optimizes for
BaZi encodes birth into four pillars using solar terms and stem–branch cycles. The day pillar’s stem — Day Master — is the structural “self” reference. Strength, useful gods, and compatibility readings hang off that stem and the elemental relationships around it.
