How do I find my Kua number?

Your Kua number comes from your solar birth year and gender. Eight Mansions uses the Chinese solar year, which begins at 立春 (Li Chun) in early February — so a birthday in January or the first days of February belongs to the previous solar year and can produce a different Kua number, and sometimes a different East/West group.

Is a house judged by the direction it faces or the direction it sits?

A house is classified by its sitting direction (坐山), which is always the 180-degree opposite of the direction it faces. A home facing south sits north, making it a Kan house (坎宅). The facing direction is what you measure at the front door; the sitting direction is what determines the house type and therefore its eight sectors.

What if my bedroom is in a bad sector?

Accepted Answer

Point the head of your bed toward one of your four supportive directions. In Eight Mansions the sleeping direction carries most of the weight that the room location cannot, and it costs nothing to change. Bathrooms, kitchens and storage are traditionally placed in the demanding sectors on purpose — a utility room in a difficult sector is correct placement (压煞), not a problem to fix.
